Chain of Custody (CoC) is the process of tracking forest products from their place of origin through all stages of transfer and production to the final consumer as an end product. The CSA SFM system includes a Chain of Custody standard that forest managers or wood products processors can use to have their tracking system certified by independent third party certifiers. Once implemented it provides customers with a measure of the portion of the product that has been sourced from a certified forest, and an assurance that the uncertified portion is from legal and non-controversial sources.
CSA, as a member of the international Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC), uses the PEFC chain of custody standard PEFC Annex 4. This gives CSA forest managers the additional option of using the PEFC product label. More information on the use of the PEFC label can be found in the PEFC Logo usage rules - requirements document. Recertification audits are required every 3 years along with annual surveillance audits. Steps in becoming CSA CoC certified: 1. Contact a CSA CoC accredited registrar 2. Complete all requirements of the PEFC Annex 4 standard 3. Organize an on-site 3rd party audit of all parts of the standard 4. Respond to any necessary audit findings 5. Wait for CSA CoC certification approval
