Any forest company or individual with management responsibility for public or private forest land may seek certification. The size of the forest area certified may range from a few hectares to more than one million hectares. The CSA Z809 Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) Standard has both performance requirements and management system requirements. All CSA certifications require, among other things: • recognition of environmental, economic, social and cultural values • conservation of biological diversity • ongoing public participation CSA certifications require independent 3rd party audits by registration organizations that have been sanctioned by the Standards Council of Canada. Audits must be consistent with international verification and auditing standards. Recertification audits are required every 3 years along with annual surveillance audits. Steps in becoming CSA certified: 1. Contact an accredited registrar 2. Complete all requirements of the standard 3. Organize an on-site 3rd party audit of all parts of the SFM standard including public participation and field verification of forest conditions. 4. Respond to any necessary audit findings. 5. Wait for CSA certification approval
